State of the art in Left Atrial Appendage Ligation - The Lariat

Percutaneous left atrial appendage ligation (LAA) has been devised as an alternative treatment modality for prevention of stroke in high risk and suitable patients in the last decade. Stroke and thrombo-embolic events are the major complications in AF patients. LAA is the major site of clot formation in patients with non-valvular AF. Thus LAA exclusion appears to be of immense value in mitigating stroke risk in patients who are intolerant to or in whom oral anticoagulants are contraindicated. The current article is a review of the latest advances in the epicardial suture ligation technique for LAA occlusion.
