Catheter Ablation of Atrial Fibrillation in the Elderly: Risk Benefit Analysis

Catheter ablation is emerged as a significant therapeutic option and reserved for drug refractory symptomatic paroxysmal and persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) patients. Although the elderly population constitutes the significant amount of the AF patients, the literatural data was inadequate regarding the use of catheter ablation for elderly patients with AF. However, there has been significant improvements in AF ablation both for efficacy and safety issues in the last decade and it has become widespread all over the world. Due to the fact that the population was aging, referrals of elderly patients for catheter ablation of AF will rise over the years. Therefore, in this paper we reviewed the published literature to date regarding the clinical efficacy and safety of catheter ablation for AF in elderly patients.
