Mortality Risk Associated with AF in Myocardial Infarction Patients

Atrial fibrillation (AF) complicating myocardial infarction (MI) has been a controversial topic for the last few decades. It has generated a plethora of debates regarding its status as a risk indicator of co-morbidities and poor haemodynamic status or independent causal mediator of poor outcomes. The management of this condition has also been idiosyncratic probably due to confusion regarding its prognostic significance. We shall review the literature and attempt to elucidate the prognostic significance as well as evidence available for defining management strategies.
